Ah, school. Some days it was great, full of new information and potential for learning. Those were the kind of days that Maxine Warren loved; they were the days when she could sit in classrooms for hours with no complaint, happy to be there learning -- which some might find odd for a girl of seventeen. Other days were like this one, where they were boring as hell. There were just some times when the senior just wasn't in the right mood to learn. She could blame it on senior-itis, but considering the school year had only been in session for all of one week, blaming it on senior-itis would be unfair. Besides, it wasn't like the first three years of high school hadn't had days like this. But Maxine was pretty sure it wasn't a good sign for her to be bored out of her mind so soon into the new year. Even history had been hard to stay focused in, and that was her favorite subject. For most of the school day, Max had sat staring out of a window, but really she was seeing the beaches that were so common in the city of Santa Ria, not the tall trees and lawns outside the window pane. Yep, she'd spent most of her day just daydreaming about sleeping in and spending waking hours in the sand, which is how she'd spent most of her summer when she had free time.
Today she would have preferred the relaxed living of summer instead of the learning environment of Norrington. Something had changed. Maybe it was because this was her last year and she was just read to be done. Or maybe it was because the school was now completely different, what with all the boys coming in. Maxine approved of the addition of the males, because to her it had been stupid to not have the school be co-ed in the first place. However, the boys coming in also made life a bit distracting, and not just for her. Max had to admit she was rather annoyed by all the babbling obnoxious girls that were constantly blabbering about how they were so excited the school was now co-ed, and which boys were the cutest, and how they wanted to try to sneak into the boys' dormitories after curfew. Boys were great and all, but Maxine wasn't as totally obsessed about them as many other girls her age were. For crying out loud, she had never even had one boyfriend. And interestingly enough, she was completely fine with that. She really didn't understand the desperate desire to have a boyfriend and lose one's virginity as soon as possible. Maxine was just not like that.
She considered all this while trudging down the streets of downtown, which she'd gone to as soon as school had finished. She'd only paused long enough to change out of her school uniform before zooming out to the parking lot to leave. After some deft driving she'd ended up in the busy area that was downtown Santa Ria. It had taken awhile to park, as it usually does, to everyone's great annoyance. After abandoning her car by a meter, Max had began the walk to her favorite coffee shop, a locally owned place she liked to sit and relax in. Her favorite table by the window was open and she quickly claimed it while waiting for her coffee. Once they called out "non-fat mocha" she jumped up, grabbed the beverage, and returned to her seat before anyone could think to steal it. Then she pulled a text book out of her bag. And promptly knocked her coffee over with it. Quick reflexes allowed her to upright the coffee fast, but not quiet fast enough. "Ah, fuck," swore the blond as she quickly made a grab for a napkin. The little stream of coffee she just spilled was making a quick exit off the edge of the table, and Maxine worked fast to wipe it off, cussing some more as she noticed the bit of brown on the thigh of her pants. Once the coffee had been hastily mopped up, Maxine stomped over to the nearest trash can and tossed the wad of soggy napkins into the abyss. Muttering to herself the whole way, she stormed back over to her table and reclaimed her seat. She shot the remaining coffee an evil glare as if daring the cup to tip over again, then picked her book back up and reopened it. And with the coffee drama behind her, Maxine began to relax and enjoy her drink while studying.
