It was a house boat that we lived in, I don’t know why. But we would just tether it into random harbours around Greece and live there for a while, then they would get bored and sail to a different little island port. I liked it on the boat, it went places, over oceans and stuff. Well, an ocean. My cot was screwed into the floor too, it had a mobile on it, but they had to take it down. It swung too much if the water was angry and a little baby dolphin snapped off and fell on me once. Thats how I have this little nick on my eye. I wish I still lived on the boat, its much nicer being on a boat. You can just get up and go swim. Just swim, if you feel like it. I never did, I’m not a good swimmer, but I liked that I could do that. I liked the harbour we lived at when I was five the best. I can’t remember where it was, but there was a little cafe in the harbour. I used to go eat breakfast with the owner’s son if my parents were asleep. My parents were always in their room, or out. Sometimes they had parties on their boat and they would tell me to stay in the cafe until they got back with the boat. I liked that cafe, it had pictures of birds on the wall.
Anyway, we lived on that boat for a good while, but there was a tropical storm when I was about seven and a lot of the boats in our harbour were damaged. Ours capsized, I had to swim then, but only a little. My father died when that happened though, which wasn’t good. I don’t think he really did though, I think he ran swam to the other side of the harbour and ran away. He had been fighting with my mother, so I think he wanted to go. I told my mother this, she said not to be such a fucking idiot. I think I’ll go look for him in Greece one day. But he might not be on the mainland, I’ll find him though. They have phone books and everything. Its wonderful. Oh, our boat capsized and so my mother took me to California where Grandma lived. We stayed there for a year, I had my own little camp bed in the living room, it was really nice. It was a bit old and uncomfortable but I could go get a drink from the kitchen whenever I wanted. I don’t think my mother and grandma liked each other much though, because they faught all the time. My mother was on heroin or something, but she seemed fine to me. Just a bit skinny but she was always angry with grandma, in any case.
We moved out when my mother got a job into a little flat. I don’t know where it was because my mother never told me, and I’d never been to California much. It was small though and the walls were damp and there was a weird man who lived next door. But then I think my mother stopped using heroin because she went to the grocery store and started buying food and we moved to Santa Ria. She started painting, she used to do that on the boat, and then she started making weird sculptures. She sells them for quite a lot but I think they’re really bad. She has a new boyfriend now called Mac, he is an actor and he’s 31. They’re never in, they keep going to places for weeks on end and leaving money on the counter, but I like being on my own. It’s like having my own little house. I’m a better cook than my mother though, I can just make food with whatever we already have. So, I just eat whatever we have and spend the money on pills and stuff. It’s lovely, and there are always people asleep in my house so I’m not really alone. I don’t know them, sometimes, but they’re always nice.
