via took a breath. there were times when she wondered why she was even in this school in the first place. she could've easily skipped a grade with the grades that she had. she could've applied to harvard or yale or something like that by now. oh yes, now she remembered. her cousin was still here. and she vowed to herself that she would do anything to protect the younger girl. she stopped herself from rolling her eyes. these were one of the rare times when she was actually this sensitive to what other people thought. it was around seven thirty by the time she finished her work and decided to go get something to eat. her brother had offered to go get some dinner together, but that was the last thing she wanted. she slipped out of her room, letting her hair down loose. her long brown locks went down her back and she sighed a little in relief. she noticed that when she was stressed, she had the habit of tying her hair or redoing her ponytail over and over again. via pulled the hem of her shirt down a little, trying to smoothe the wrinkles as she walked down the hallways. she had been stuck in school all day, but still, she found it important to keep her fashion in tact. it was one of her life dreams to become a famous designer. the way she kept it up, she would have a chance of making it big. the air was a bit on the warm side and it was making her cheeks turn rosy red with both warmth and irritation. even though she had been in california for nearly four years, she was tired of the whole thing. it was almost the same as the stuff she had seen on television. talk about the whole gossip girl scene- even though she could vaguely remember the setting was in new york.
she entered the cafeteria, only to see that almost everyone was gone. oh great. she took some lip gloss out of her pocket and applied it on carefully. she didn't really care whether it was going to fade away quickly. as long as it was on now. via selected her food and went to an empty table that was located in the middle. it was mostly a statement, saying that no one was in the room, so mind as well stay in the middle. but still, it was different. usually, she was in the corner- mostly 'cause everyone pushed her to the side. she sat down, picking up a french fry and eating it contently. via wasn't one of those people who panicked over her weight. she could hardly care less. she thought that the people who worried about their weight all the time was totally pointless. why starve yourself when you mind as well do excercise? some people just never thought. and those were the kind of people that via tried to avoid. if she ever confronted one of 'them', she would probably start spurting off in a 'i hate this baout you' speech and it just wouldn't be pleasant. she shook her head, thinking of the possibilities. nah, it wouldn't be good. she took out her book 'jane eyre' from her bag and flipped to the page she had her bookmark in. jane eyre was her favorite book ever and even after reading it almost millions of times, she valued every word, every page of it. emily bronte was a genius. via continued to eat the french fries as she read word by word, tuning out the rest of the world.

L o v e . c o m e . s a v e . m e
L o v e . c o m e . s a v e . m e . s o o n Bored. Alec was bored. And not just the 'bored' that young children complained about while they tried to drag their parents into some sort of activity or another, but the type or 'bored' that made him feel like pulling his hair out and setting it on fire. He desperately wanted to complain to someone - Bright, was the first person that came to mind, Leslie, second - but he was trying to pull himself together. After all, surely, surely there was something for him to do on campus. So far, he hadn't been too lucky.
He had friends. Or, rather, sort of friends. And although Alec was quite sure that many of them were readily available, he didn't consider them worth his time at the moment, even in his time of absolute boredom. It was irritating him, how he couldn't manage to suck it up and go catch up with one of his friends. Some people ate when they were feeling sorry for themselves or had nothing to do. Alec wasn't like that - if he was, he'd be out of a job in an instant, not that he really needed the extra income - but he did, on this particular day, head down to the dining hall. He had already eaten, but supposed that it didn't matter. Most people were already done with dinner anyway - that much he could tell from the many adolescents that had taken to sprinting through the halls - which was exactly what he was going for. It would be a great deal quieter. Not as dead-silent as the library, of course, but the dining hall would provide a different sort of environment. Plus, it was an environment that he was allowed to eat and drink in.
So Alec trudged down the corridor to the dining hall, Oryx and Crake in hand. His white Lacoste sneakers gleamed in the dim lighting, tapping gently against the newly-polished floors. Even though it was a rather casual evening, that didn't mean he'd ever even think of dressing like some tramp from the street. He eventually rounded the corner and spotted the entrance to the dining hall. Alec let out a sigh. It was rather pathetic, to be reading in the dining hall all by himself in the evening, but he supposed that it was better than hanging around in the hall, moping. Or worse yet, in his dorm. Cohen, he felt, probably wouldn't hesitate to toss out a few snarky comments on that.
He plucked a shining green apple out of a bowl that rested by the serving counter, before turning to scan the cafeteria. As he'd suspected, it was next to empty, with very few people he actually talked to. Perhaps that was best. Less people to notice how pathetic he probably looked. With a sigh, he made his way over to one of the tables, at which sat one lone girl. She seemed to be around his age, perhaps older. Attractive. Alec mentally kicked himself. He wasn't meant to be thinking such things - not anymore, anyway. But then....he supposed a stray thought here and there wasn't going to do anyone much damage.
Alec slid into the seat next to the girl, although he was careful not to be in her personal space. Unless, of course, she was one of those people with a comfort bubble that extended a mile in radius. He doubted she was, though. Alec quirked an eyebrow as he snuck a quick glance at the title of her novel. "You read Brontë?" he inquired, his voice coming out smoothly, the French accent audible, with just the tiniest rise at the end to indicate that it was a question. Alec set his own book down, following it with the apple. They sat in a perfect little pile, almost as though they were waiting to be photographed like that.

to say that via was a social person, well was a total lie. she wasn't exactly the most friendliest person in the world and heck, she knew that. she remembered her teacher telling her mom that she had to lighten up and stop almost looking down on other students. yeah, she wouldn't be surprised if her classmates thought of her as stuck up. frankly, via just didn't care. she was perfectly content in who she was and she really didn't need friends to prove it to her. sure there were a couple people she favored over others, but she didn't really feel like talking to them. there were only sometimes when she would see someone in particular that she wanted to meet. hey and speak of the devil. she had been starting up at the page when she saw a younger boy walk through the doors. he was rather attractive in an almost dark and brooding way. his hair was dark and skin much paler. as sad as this seemed, he reminded her of a vampire. she smiled slightly at the reference before hiding her face back in her book. she started reading again, letting the images of the younger boy slip from her mind. whatever. her burger was cut in half. one half was put to the side and the other was cut into smaller pieces. for some reason, via didn't like 'shoving' things into her mouth so she had the tendency to cut things into smaller bites. not to mention that she liked eating the burger in parts. usually if was the bread, then the meat, then the lettuce, then the tomato, and lastly the other piece of bread. by then, she would be too full to eat the other half of the burger. something about eating it in pieces just made it seem like a bigger quantity.
via picked up her fork and delicately 'forked' a piece of the bread. she put it into her mouth before feeling the presence of someone else. her brown eyes barely glanced up as she realized who it was. it was the dark and brooding vampire boy. she kept her eyes focused on the words of emily bronte, but just knowing that someone else was there made her suddenly self contious. she realized that she was reading the same line over and over again. via didn't react when he asked her about her book. she noticed the accent in his voice, but her facial expression didn't change. she swallowed the piece that was in her mouth and almost dismissively muttered, "mmhmm." via wasn't into making friends. she wasn't in school to do that. she was in school to learn and that's what she was going to do. she really had no intention on making new friends. still, the boy made her curious. she didn't say anything for a moment as she chewed hesistantly on a french fry and rereading the words over and over again. she finally gave into her own game and cleared her throat lightly. "what are you reading?" she asked, not even glancing up from her book, but if you knew her well, you might be able to hear the curiousity that lingered in her voice.

L o v e . c o m e . s a v e . m e
L o v e . c o m e . s a v e . m e . s o o n Alec hadn't been expecting her to leap to her feet and start belting out Broadway tunes, but it was somewhat disheartening when she seemed only to make an incomprehensible mumble in response. He was about to get up, take his book and apple and hide out in a dark corner somewhere since talking to this girl obviously wasn't an option, when she did eventually open her mouth. "What are you reading?" It wasn't exactly that profound, the sort of thing that made him truly think and question his very existence, but it was something. What was more, it was a potential conversation starter. And Alec needed conversation. Desperately.
"Oryx and Crake," he replied, tapping the book's cover with a forefinger. The book was in mint condition, as all his books were. It was one of the reasons why he hated using library books. The thought of other, filthy little fingers thumbing through the same books that he was touching sent chills up his spine. "Atwood," he elaborated, just in case. Margaret Atwood was a highly-celebrated author, but it was possible that the girl hadn't heard of her. Still, he doubted it if she were interested in classics, like Jane Eyre. Atwood wasn't necessarily 'classics,' but it was quality literature nonetheless. Alec generally preferred books that had substance. Not like the mindless teen angst novellas the kids his age were mostly into. In fact, he couldn't imagine how spew like that was published, or why anyone would pay actual money to read any of it.
He allowed himself one brief moment to look the girl over. She was definitely quite pretty, and seemed to exude an air of confidence which he always looked for in girls. Alec's eyes traveled down from the girl's face to her dress. Whoever she was, she obviously had style. Not one of those girls that simply put together similar colours and proclaimed that they made an outfit. But Alec was, of course, learning that baggy cardigans and worn sneakers could be quite attractive as well...Alec blinked, shoving those thoughts from his head. He redirected his eyes towards the table, the surface of which he skimmed until he came across the girl's burger. Alec was generally one to sneer at fatty, overall-unhealthy foods in schools, but at the moment, he forgot to do so. A small part of him wondered whether this girl was afflicted by obsessive compulsive disorder, which might explain the current state of her hamburger.
It had been cut in half, one placed off to the side, and the rest cut up into tiny little pieces with a meticulous amount of care. If you wanted to appear refined while eating, why on Earth would you get yourself a hamburger? It definitely wasn't the healthiest of foods either. Fatty beef, fried in god-knows-what, carb-rich buns slathered in mustard and mayonnaise, limp lettuce, soggy tomato. Who would ever eat something like that? But this girl seemed to be taking her time with the burger. Perhaps she was just treating herself. Alec sat silently for another second as he contemplated why he was obsessing so much over the girl's food. He reached out and took his apple back into his hand, fingers skating over the waxy green surface. "I don't believe we've met, Mademoiselle? I'm Alec." Not the most formal of introductions, but he hoped it would pass. There were plenty of people at Norrington who had money and had been raised in classy, high-society families, and had rather high standards. Alec was one of those students.

from what she could gather, the vampire boy welcomed conversation. via took a deep, but quiet breath. he must not have heard the rumors and gossip about her. according to everyone else, she had a bit of a cold shoulder and didn't get along well with people. she had that judgemental streak and a sharp way with words. the pretty face was only a disguise. what she really had was a bitter heart and if there was a contest for wicked witch of the west, she would win. via had heard all of those things and personally, she thought they had all pegged it. she knew she wasn't the friendliest person on the block and so maybe that was why she found this boy to be rather odd. odd could be translated in many ways, but at the moment, it was a good thing for via. it was definitely refreshing. well, if he wanted a conversation, a conversation he was going to get. of course whether it was welcoming or not was a whole other subject. via put her book down and raised an eyebrow in his direction. if he wanted her attention, he was going to have to try a lot harder than that. oryx and crake- of course she read it. she nodded just a little, showing him that she knew what he was talking about. via found it her business to read almost every single book there was. if he named a random one, there was possibility she would have read it before. "interesting choice for a boy such as yourself," she said, not bothering to soften the truth about saying 'boy'. she would use whatever language she wanted to. if he found her saying 'boy' insulting, he must have a rather easily sensitive personality. via added, "wouldn't expect someone like you to be reading about scientific fiction and genetic engineering. the novel goes pretty deep, you know. most people prefer to turn to brainless material like twilight." sure she might be treating him like a child, but frankly, she didn't care that much. the fact that she was commenting on his choice of reading was more of a compliment. she had to admit that she was pleasantly surprised to know that he wasn't one of them.
she could see him looking over her meal and she did wonder what he thought of it. she wasn't aneroxic, if that's what he was thinking. via didn't care what anyone thought of how she looked and so she allowed herself to eat whatever she wanted. still, a conversation was always made interesting with different opinions. via let the silence roam over them as she let him think whatever he wanted. a small smile came upon her lips as he seemed to finish his thoughts. she couldn't help it and knew that she would probably regret saying what she wanted to know. via glanced at him curiously, "is there anything you want to say about my burger?" she asked smoothly. this was definitely going to be entertaining. it wasn't that she found joy out of embarrassment. she mostly enjoyed things that would be amusing to her, even though it might not be for other people. then again, this boy let himself be the target of amusement- he sat at the same table in the first place. his introduction was a little odd, again. this boy just seemed to be full of surprises, huh. she couldn't remember the last time anyone had said the words i don't believe we've met... unless they were over the age of fifty. plus, she would have expected him to say his full name like 'william dennis stephen hamland the fourteenth, prince of denmark, future ruler of the world' or something like that. ending it off so... informally was a bit of a disappointment after such a formal beginning. she tucked a brown lock of hair behind her ear before saying, "via. via carson."

L o v e . c o m e . s a v e . m e
L o v e . c o m e . s a v e . m e . s o o n Alec raised an immaculate eyebrow. The girl wasn't being outright hostile, but her choice of words reflected a subconscious - or perhaps subtly interjected - irritation towards him. Or maybe that was just her personality. But she was rather intriguing - more interesting than sitting on his lonesome and reading, anyway - and so Alec decided it wouldn't hurt to put himself up to the challenge. Well, it could potentially hurt his ego, but Alec supposed he'd just have to learn to take the punches. After all, he seemed to be getting quite a few at Norrington. The student body wasn't as easy to win over as he was used to. That being said, Alec was rather pleased that the girl decided to continue conversation and not simply brush him off. But still - he couldn't believe she was bringing up Twilight. Alec had tried reading those books once, to try and see what all the hype was about - and perhaps somehow come to understand his more...well, his more airheaded schoolmates - but he had found it absolutely impossible. Every time he cracked open the pages he could feel his brain cells writhing in agony and throwing themselves off some precipice in his mind like lemmings. Even as she said the word 'Twilight' Alec felt as though he were reliving that same torture. Alec didn't even try to keep the slight cringe out of his features. "Twilight is a plague sent to rob people of their perceptions of what is actually good reading material and what is obviously not. So yes, I enjoy Atwood's portrayals of dystopian societies. She makes them seem so realistic, doesn't she?" Alec smiled calmly, gazing steadily towards the girl. He hoped to accomplish two things with that last comment. Firstly, to perhaps spark a conversation, but secondly, to discern whether she had actually read the book or if she was just picking through her memory for a plot summary she'd read up on Wikipedia some time in the past.
"Is there anything you want to say about my burger?" Alec couldn't stop the corner of his mouth twitching into a brief smile. It was fleeting - gone perhaps even before she had noticed it - but it had still been there. Forward, wasn't she? Well, he admired that in people, especially girls, who he saw, sadly enough, becoming more and more like timid, dependent creatures - such roles as they used to be forced into by society. Alec smiled politely. "Only that I appreciate your care taken in properly portioning your food. It is, I believe, key to maintaining good health." If she wanted to play games, then he would let her. She seemed clever enough, but Alec figured she might be a little thrown if he matched her step for step. People like her generally were. In Alec's mind, he had this girl rather well figured out already. Nowhere near completely figured out, but still enough. He was arrogant like that, and however well Alec knew that arrogance was a terrible flaw to have, it wasn't exactly something he could change overnight. Especially since he was still on the borderline of denial in regards to that specific personality flaw that everyone else identified him as having.
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Via," he replied, without missing a beat. If it had been a more formal arrangement, like, say, at a gala for his father's bank, he probably would have called her 'Mademoiselle' again and then gushed about how lovely her dress was and how he had been so looking forward to meeting her. But because they were in the dining hall at a boarding school and Via was eating a hamburger of all things, he decided that such things would be inappropriate. There was a time for extreme formalities, of course, but this wasn't one of them. Via, also, wasn't being especially stiff and traditional, so Alec took this as a sign that this wasn't that sort of interaction. "Might I ask if I'm bothering you, Via? You seemed perhaps slightly abrasive when I first introduced myself?" He had to pick and choose his words carefully to avoid giving her a whopping amount of ammunition with which to fire back at him, but Alec still knew that there was probably something she could pick up out of that.

for some reason, vampire boy was quite impressive. and via didn't like that. she didn't really like it when people excelled in her expectations without really knowing why. still, she didn't say this out loud. to do so would be surrendering in such a... delightful game. what he said about twilight was definitely true. she had heard some of layla's friends talking about it and well, that's all she needed to turn away. she had checked the book out of the library, but never flipped a page open. instead, it let it sit there for weeks before returning it, untouched. she let out a small chuckle at his comment. the chuckle wasn't exactly a giggly one or a sneer. it was more on the entertained side, "so how would you describe your classmates, particularly the ones who have read this 'mind-robbing' material?" via couldn't help but be amused at what he was saying. him, being a boy, she didn't expect him to like the novel, but hearing him say that in such a blunt matter was quite a statement. she rolled her eyes. he didn't believe her, did he. without missing a beat, she replied, "atwood's view of the future is possible, seeing the rate of our development in genetic engineering, the social seperation, and increase of sexual harassment. realistic, yes, but it also follows a mere trend since many other furturistic novels also have a realistic element to them." her brown eyes held the same steadiness as he was. she wasn't at all shaken by his comment, only annoyed. most other children would have simply walked away, but vampire boy was different. so different that she could see he was nearly showing everything he had off as if it made him so much more special than anyone else.
mmhm. that was the only thing she could think of. a sarcastic matter, of course. food wasn't a concern to her. she naturally had a slim body and the years of ice skating that she had done built up enough muscle to last for a couple years, so lack of food would only be a waste. "thank you, but if i needed my mother, i would have simply stayed home," her voice was a little on the quiet side, but it got the point across as clear as if she had yelled. yeah, like she wanted to stay home. someone would have to drag her back in order to go back and even then, they'd have a difficult time doing so. via was determined not to let the boy get to her and lucky for her, she was used to such ignorance. her parents always seemed to be rather clueless when it came to her and let's just say that she learned it from the masters themselves. what he was giving her was more like a challenge, something that she welcomed. if he wanted to play games, then bring it on. she didn't mean to say something cold every time he said something, it was simply her personality. via didn't get along well with people and so if they chose to start a conversation with her, it was just a warning. then again, she didn't give a care in the world about other people thought of her. weakness, strength, it wasn't quitesure, but it wouldn't make a difference to her anyways. she took another bite of her burger, that was starting to grow cold. and she blamed vampire boy.
he might have a name, but she already grew to calling him by her own name. it wasn't going to change- unless he somehow gained her respect and at the moment, he wasn't doing too well. all she wanted to do was show him that whatever he did, whatever he said, she would always be better than him. via had the tendency to prove that every time she met someone and this would be no different. "bothering? oh, no. i must say, you're doing quite the oppostite. you're much more amusing than i could have imagined," she gave a slight smirk. "i've never met anyone with such maturity," she said. yeah, as if she was going to keep gushing it in. if you knew via, that would hardly be the case. she added, "not to mention ignorance, arrogance, as well as being conceited." she ended it off with a slight smile. well, at least she got message across.

L o v e . c o m e . s a v e . m e
L o v e . c o m e . s a v e . m e . s o o n This Via was certainly entertaining. She might not know if, of course, but even in their short interaction, Alec was already finding himself drawn to the girl. She seemed to be confident, never having to search for things to say. Those were the kinds of traits he admired in people. He had initially thought that she was one of those girls who had nothing better to do with her life than bitch at everyone and loathe the world and everything in it, but that now appeared to not be the case. Via was actually demonstrating intelligence and thoughtfulness - the sort that was grossly absent among the students of Norrington - and she was starting to interest him greatly. Even so, Alec had a feeling that she might be a little difficult. Oh well. He needed to be challenged once in a while, lest he get complacent. And if those challenges came in this form, than so be it.
How would he describe those classmates? Was she trying to catch him on something? Alec sighed internally. For some reason, dealing with her wasn't tiresome. But it did try his patience slightly, he was finding. Alec thought for a moment, tilting his head to the side, before finally saying, his expression the pinnacle of mock-seriousness, "I'd call them vacuous." He shrugged. In Alec's opinion, it was alright to read material of lesser quality and/or depth at times, but to sink to the level of Twilight...that was unforgivable. It wasted hours of precious time on undeveloped characters and grotesquely unrealistic plots, even for the young adult fantasy genre. Alec smiled blandly at Via's comment. It was interesting to have someone with whom he could discuss novels of actual substance, especially since he didn't know her very well. But still, Alec found that he was enjoying himself. Being stuck in a school with a bunch of coasting brats that didn't give a damn about their futures sometimes made him feel as though he were going insane...or stupid. That might be a bigger problem. At least Via seemed decent for keeping himself in shape mentally. Of course, that might just be a first impression. Alec frequently found that people changed drastically from the first day you met them. It was only once they began to get comfortable that you truly began to see glimpses of the person that they really were. Alec himself tended to hold back until he got a good sense of who a person was. He supposed it was a self-defense mechanism, but it wasn't one the necessarily hampered his social interactions. Not more than he cared about, anyway.
"Of course it's possible. However, what I am intrigued by in Atwood's science fiction works is her portrayal of the characters and their inner struggles when faced with a world that has descended into unfathomable horrors. How her figures react when the unacceptable becomes the acceptable." Perhaps he was talking too much, but it was a discussion - should they not discuss? And too bad for her if she thought him garrulous. Alec told himself that he could care less about making a bad impression, and that if Via didn't want to listen to him anymore, it was her loss. "Because in reality, it's the human factor that drives society - not technological advancement. And really, isn't the human factor the most unpredictable of them all? Shouldn't that mean that our future is, in effect, totally unpredictable?" He had a look of polite interest on his face, although he was more engaged than the expression showed. Alec dragged a forefinger over the skin of his apple. He liked this girl. She provoked thoughts in him.
"Be sure that I have no intention of ever becoming your mother." His tone was light, indicating that he was joking, although it was doubtful that she'd take it as anything else. Soon after, though, Alec almost winced. There, he had given her plenty of material there with which she could attack him. "Ignorance?" Alec questioned, raising an eyebrow. He wasn't going to even try to contest the 'arrogance' or 'conceited' comments, since that definitely wouldn't work. Alec knew that his self-pride was perhaps a little too high. Or a lot. But ignorant? "I don't believe, Via, that I have given you any reason to see me as ignorant. Would you care to enlighten me?"
