history ,Jeremiah was abandoned by his mother almost after birth. She'd cared for him for a bit, but she wanted her life - still budding and young - to be served for some greater purpose rather than raising a little baby she hadn't even meant to have. That was how it was, really. Curtis Valentino had met Kayle James in a bar. They weren't as drunk as they were careless and when she left his apartment she hadn't left a number. Later, she realized she was pregnant. Oh, joy! In any case, she waited the typical nine months after being pleaded by her grandparents - who wanted a grandchild badly - not to get an abortion.
As it was, Kayle was a very self-centered person, fortunately a trait that she didn't pass down to her child. But, without consulting her parents, she decided to maybe try and see if the father would take him off her hands. Returning to the bar was a longshot but it paid off since she knew the baby daddy's surname. She asked around for a Valentino before the bartender finally told her what had happened to one of his best customers. "Died in a car accident," the man had told her. "Poor guy never got much out of life. No wife. No children." Well, part of that wasn't true, but it was hard for Kayle to feel remorse for the man who knocked her up. She was about to walk away when the bartender stopped her. "He's got family, though... I can get you their address."
Leo Valentino was a family man. He was married and already had a child about a year older than Jeremiah. He was also a caring man and when Kayle showed up at his door pleading for him to take his brother's baby, he couldn't say no. The boy was of Valentino blood. One of their own. And so he took the baby, after much discussion, off of Kayle who promptly never showed up at their doorstep again. Not even to visit her son.
Jeremiah grew up with his cousin Aidan thinking of him more as a brother more than anything else. He was loved by the Valentino family and even though they told him at an early age that he was more or less adopted he still thought of them as his real family - never really caring one way or another who his mother was. He grew up learning the morals from Leo Valentino his father obviously hadn't. Leo told him that if he was going to have sex before marriage, at least have it with someone important enough.
Leo was a pretty good-going guy but he was also strict. He branded into the two boys manners. They were "yes, sir. no, sir" children if that means anything. However, when the teen years rolled around and both began to attend Hakebourne Academy, rules became more lax as hormones took hold of both boys. Aidan was the one who primarily showed his independence and free will. Not that that was a bad thing. But still... Leo's authority began to weigh less on both's shoulders, though Jeremiah was too quiet to outright question it. Unlike Aidan. But that was besides the point.
Years passed and Jer didn't really do much at the academy. He was sort of a jack of all trades but master at none. He lapsed in and out of different extra curriculars like art, music, and writing, but couldn't really find one he's stick to. Later, he joined the football team and was a pretty okay wide reciever, but it didn't last long. Still, he earned qualities playing such as patience and listening to authority - for the coach only pulled him further into that concept. He also learned how to stick up for himself for he had to on the field and football brought more of the violent attitude out harboring within him. Jeremiah's short fuse was shortened.
It's difficult to explain the transition of boyhood to adult. But, it's like... Jer kept the qualities that Leo and his coaches and all the other figures in his life had grounded into him. Aidan was different. If one were going to go into the psychology of it, they might think it was because Jer sort of showed him up to his own parents. Aidan didn't like his perfect cousin - though that seriously was an exaggeration - and started to get in reckless arguments and fights with him. He began disobeying rules and even sneaking out. They got into more fights those days and sort of drifted apart. Now they don't really talk to each other too much, though Jer still cares for his cousin if not liking him too much anymore.
Around the end of his sophomore year, Hakebourne closed down. His parents scrambled to find a new school for the boys and finally settled upon the local Norrington Academy. It had once been girls only, and that sort of bothered Jer. He wasn't too good around girls and a school basically overflowing with them was intimidating. Still, it's the start of junior year and he's determined.
