Leslie sighed quietly as she stepped out into the quiet streets of Santa Ria. Behind the creamy colored buildings you could see the sun setting slowly, making the small city seem more beautiful than it already was. The main street was completely isolated though, with only a couple of people rushing past Leslie. Everyone seemed to be in a hurry. Well, everyone except her. She pulled her sweater tighter around her skinny and petite body, as it was already beginning to get slightly cold, before finally making her way towards Johnny’s Diner. She was supposed to be meeting Alec that night, for a small dinner and chat about a certain someone. As in any normal school, rumors were just something you had to get used to. And lately she had been hearing a lot about Alec, although she never had the chance to properly ask him.
She took a quick look at her watch as she bit her lower lip. She was early, which was so unlike her. Most shops were already closed and the last thing she wanted to do was to go in and sit by herself, so all she could do at that moment was wait impatiently. Her arms still hugging her small body, she began to hum quietly as she stared down at the ground. She had had lunch with her mother earlier that day, so she wasn’t exactly in the best of moods. Her mother, who suffered from depression, tended to have that effect on her. It had been around three years since her dad’s death, yet her mother still couldn’t or wouldn’t move on. Leslie missed him a lot too, but she had come to realize at an early stage that sitting and sulking in her room was going to get her nowhere. Especially at a boarding school.
She loved spending time with her mom; especially because she knew that her mother really had no one else to turn to. But sometimes it would just send Leslie’s happiness down the drain, which she hated. Mrs. Aston didn’t know that many people in the States, only her work colleagues, so she spent most of her days at home with nothing to do which eventually led her to collapse into tears. Leslie had to understand her loneliness though. After all, her mother didn’t have the luxury of going to a boarding school where making friends was as easy as taking a shower.
Letting another sigh escape her lips she checked her watch again, only to see that there was still five minutes of torture left. She hated waiting, yet she had no clue why she had come earlier that night. Maybe because she was so eager to find out what Alec had been up to these past few days, or maybe it was just because she failed at life.

I . C A N . B E . A N Y T H I N G . T H A T . Y O U . W A N T . M E . T O . B E Alec generally prided himself on being entirely on time. It was a skill he'd picked up over the years in France, where proper etiquette had been much more important than it was in America. Or perhaps it had been because the school he'd gone to actually held etiquette classes. Yes, that was probably it. And so, glancing at his watch - platinum-plated, no less - Alec was surprised to find that it was exactly one minute and twelve seconds before the time he'd scheduled to meet with Leslie. Strange. He was sure he would have arrived four minutes after the decided-upon time, just for the sake of things running smoothly. Arriving at the same time as a 'coincidence' didn't look very professional, in Alec's mind. And since Leslie had organized the place, it seemed only right that she arrive first. Even though he couldn't really justify these thoughts, Alec was hoping that Leslie had been early - not that he wanted her to wait for him - so that they wouldn't have to sit down at the same time.
Alec pulled his bomber jacket tighter around him as a particularly exuberant gust of wind blew his way. It wasn't freezing outside, but for California, it was quite chilly. He had been back in California for almost three years now, but he still found it strange, how quickly he'd adapted. He glanced down the street, which was fairly deserted - wasn't California supposed to be busy - before rushing across the road towards Johnny's Diner where Leslie had chosen for them to meet. A diner wasn't his first choice, of course, but Alec knew that it might be difficult and awkward to sell the idea of him paying for her at a higher-class restaurant. They were casual friends, he'd eventually concluded. They ate casual dinners.
Aside from a class or two that they shared together, Alec and Leslie hadn't really talked much in the past few days. She was a good friend - easy to talk to, a ready listener, positive - and Alec found that he sort of missed the socializing. It was a welcome distraction from the stress of daily life. In fact, it seemed as though any sort of friendly interaction was a distraction from that stress. Perhaps that meant he was overworking himself. But no, he couldn't be. Alec still had the rest of the student body to win over.
He stepped through the door's of the moderately-busy diner, spotting Leslie almost instantly. Amidst a sea of blond, athletic Californians sitting in large groups and chatting, Leslie, dark-haired and petite, all on her lonesome, was easy to spot. He made his way over to her quickly enough, slipping into the seat across from her. Alec offered a small, lopsided smile in apology. "Sorry Leslie, have you been waiting long?" He hoped she hadn't been. That would just set the evening off to a bad start, and bad starts, like in sports such as sprinting or luge, meant more bad was yet to come.

I . C A N . B E . A N Y T H I N G . T H A T . Y O U . W A N T . M E . T O . B E He grinned crookedly. "Whoops, sorry about that," he apologized, nodding towards Leslie as she righted herself. He was fairly tall, really. It wasn't that difficult to see him coming. In fact, he was often told he cast quite a shadow. Alec found it quite amusing to witness how free Leslie was with her emotions. The girl was generally quite a happy, friendly person, which counteracted his own personality quite nicely. Not that he was a somber, sulky sort of person, but Alec did find it difficult to let loose sometimes.
"Good, good," he said absently. At least he hadn't been too late. He turned his eyes to her and noted her wandering eyes. Was she looking for someone? Probably not, since she'd arranged this dinner with him. Maybe she had a lot on her mind...that was probably it. After all, why would she have chosen today for them to meet up? There was probably an important matter for discussion. Why she had chosen him to talk about it with, Alec wasn't sure. He and Leslie were good friends, he knew that, but people generally didn't trust him that much, and with a person like Leslie, he was surprised she trusted him at all.
Alec nodded, fiddling with the paper napkins. He normally preferred them to be cloth and come with napkin holders - or at least folded nicely - but he supposed this would have to do. "Yeah, probably just a sandwich. And you?" A sandwich was classic American food. Not hard to do, and not long in the making. Because she had asked, Alec assumed that she knew what she wanted to order, but it was still polite to ask. He didn't want to fluster her by calling a waiter over and then making her decide on the spot. That would be remarkably ungentlemanly of him.
He didn't even look at the menu, because even if the diner didn't have something so simple as a club sandwich, he figured that they could just make him one if he asked nicely. After all, however...common the diner was, surely the chef - although he hesitated to call the cook in such a place a chef, as there was an obvious lack of refinement - had enough to skill to make a sandwich without having a recipe set out in front of him. Or her. Alec knew that he himself was capable of making such a sandwich, and he rarely made his own food. Therefore, he felt no need to look at the menu.

Leslie picked up the menu, her fingertips feeling the coolness of the plastic. "Yeah, probably just a sandwich. And you?" she heard him say as she nodded quietly. She was starving, as usual, but knew that Alec probably didn’t want to stay in a place like this for too long. So a burger would have to do. She’d eat desert later when she was back in her dorm. After all, her mother had basically showered her with all sorts of sweets and what not. Yeah, she’d be fine with just a small burger. “My diet being very healthy, I think I’ll take a burger and a glass of coke” she laughed as she put the menu back down. Everyone knew, well at least all her friends knew that her diet was pretty unhealthy, eating everything that tasted good even if it didn’t necessarily do your body good. This was where she was different to Alec. He had been brought up in high society, eating in fancy restaurants since he was a child. In other words, eating the best any chef could offer. Yet she on the other hand preferred to eat easy meals, take away, something that you could eat fast and feel full after just one bite. She was definitely one of the lucky ones, being petite in figure and extremely short, she knew that no matter what she ate she would never gain weight. Looking up at his face Leslie noticed him fiddling with the paper napkin. He looked so out of place, with his posture and elegancy, it seemed as if she was his charity case. A small smirk formed on the corner of her lips as she kept on eyeing him with her light gray eyes. As much as she liked him as a friend, and respected him, she definitely had to admit that it was fun ‘torturing’ him in that way. Seeing him look at everything around him as if it were inferior made he want to burst out laughing yet she restrained herself. She didn’t want him to think that she was laughing at exactly him. It was rude and would just be downright awkward. Leslie cleared her throat as she took another look around her, this time trying to find a waitress to serve them. She couldn’t find one though, almost certain that they were either busy with other guests or just didn’t feel like working. Letting out a small sigh she reverted her ghostly eyes back at Alec, who in fact was still sitting in front of her. She was glad he hadn’t given up yet, but then again she was sure he wouldn’t. He was a gentleman after all. “What have you been up to lately?” she asked quietly bending her upper body slightly forward. “I’ve been hearing a lot of things” as much as she would have wanted to wait until they got served, she couldn’t. It would take too long anyway so she might as well ask him straight up. I . C A N . B E . A N Y T H I N G . T H A T . Y O U . W A N T . M E . T O . B E Alec smiled lightly at Leslie's comment. She managed to appear witty without the negative effects of using sarcasm. He turned his eyes to the brunette across from him, away from the napkin that he had rapidly turned into a substance that resembled confetti. It was amazing, almost, how she could eat so...well, unhealthily, and still maintain her rather thin figure. In fact, she had a body that some models he knew would kill for. Or, at the very least, start killing themselves for. But Leslie ate like a normal teenager, and so however much he wanted to shove her off all the trans fats and carbohydrates in burgers and the chemicals and sugar in soft drinks, it was still entirely up to her to do what she wanted with herself. So until she started starving herself, binge-drinking and self-injuring, Alec figured it was best for him to stay out of her personal affairs. At that point, though, he'd have to intervene. Not that Leslie would probably ever turn out like that, of course.
He found himself monumentally uncomfortable in such a setting, where the diner's other occupants talked loudly, leaned back in their chairs and laughed openly, but Alec supposed that it was just one more thing that he'd have to get used to. After all, it wasn't like he was always going to be running with the same high-society class. Who knew - one day, his whole world might come crashing down. Alec snuck another glance around. There was definitely less pressure in such a place, but that didn't change the mild feelings of anxiety that were brewing within him. Leslie's presence, though, made him feel more at ease.
“What have you been up to lately?” Alec shrugged, moving the shredded napkin he'd created around on the plasticy surface of the table. "Not much," he replied, trying to keep his voice even. That was a lie, of course. Well, only just. Really, not much had happened apart from one specific event - Bright. He supposed he could refer to that night as an 'event,' as it had certainly been eventful. Lots of staring, to be sure, but he supposed that a lot of small, subtle happenings were enough to make up one grand 'event'. He and Bright hadn't exactly advertised anything yet, and Alec wasn't keen on doing so without her express consent. He and Bright were such good friends...but then again, he and Leslie were too. Should he talk to her about it? It certainly wouldn't hurt his and Leslie's friendship to tell her, but him and Bright? Alec's fingers began shredding the already tiny napkin pieces even further.
"Oh? Like what?" Alec suddenly leaned back in his chair, holding out a hand. It was acceptable to do such things in a place like this, and so he would take the opportunity. "Waiter." His voice was perhaps a little cutting, but it made its way clearly enough across the small diner. An apron-clad teen was by their table almost in an instant, fumbling with a pad of paper and a cheap, gnawed-on pen. "A burger and a coke for the lady," he began, hoping Leslie didn't mind him ordering for her, "And a club sandwich for myself, please." The waiter repeated their order back to him, and Alec accepted it with a nod of the head. The gangly teenager sped off towards the kitchen, leaving him and Leslie alone once again.
Alec smiled enigmatically, calmly pushing the napkin shreds into a small pile at the side of his place setting - which was definitely not as elaborate as he was used to, but Alec could still make out a basic structure - before opening his mouth to speak again. "You were saying, Leslie?" He was, obviously, trying to avoid the subject, but he doubted it would work. Leslie wasn't an idiot - it was highly unlikely that she had lost her train of thought.
